Originally Misty Meadows was an Angus steer fattening enterprise but things changed rapidly after a visit to a local field day where a couple of Square Meaters cattle were on exhibit. One look at those “butts” and we were converted! Further research confirmed our initial enthusiasm as we learned of the outstanding characteristics of the breed.
In 2006 we purchased a magnificent group of 30 breeders and two bulls from the renowned Woolaringa Stud. With a small selection of females from other breeders added to the herd, and by retaining several of our own Misty Meadows heifers, we now have one of the largest herds in Victoria, and often have quality animals for sale.
Our medium framed, early maturing, well muscled Square Meaters cattle are ideal for he domestic beef market, and we breed genetically for tenderness and food effiiency.
We have commenced a GeneStar testing program with excellent results for tenderness and food conversion ratios.
Woolaringa Yarra Y73 is our standing primary Sire. A very active, fertile bull Woolaringa Yarra is well structured and achieved excellent GeneStar ratings of:
8 stars for tenderness and
6 stars for Feed efficiency.
Misty Meadows Bounty B7 (sired by Rainbow Xanadu) is also an excellent sire and after Genstar testing rates at 8 stars for Tenderness and 6 for Feed Efficiency.
This fine looking animal is typical of a Square Meaters female. They are the compact quiet achievers of the Australian beef industry – a breed that holds on when times get tough and power ahead when the seasons improve.
Outstanding Performance in the Drought
The 2006/2007 drought has hit hard in Victoria. We were absolutely amazed at the performance of the Square Meaters in these very tough times. With little but pasture stubble left, we fed out the first bale of hay in mid-February 2007. See for yourself – these females have held their condition beautifully and continue to do well.
